Be the Reason: Malaisyah Vann

Scholarships help students at Saint Louis University all across their college journeys. Hear from SLU alumnae and graduate student Malaisyah Vann on how donor support stepped in when times got hard.Malaisyah says: "Finances are a big part of whether you can get good education.Recently, my family has gone through some financial hardships. And so having extra money or just like scholarships is really helpful, especially since I had to take like more classes because I am a double major and I am pursuing a master's degree. And so it's just giving me a little freedom to like, pursue what I want and to actually do something that I would like to do.For my capstone in criminal justice, we have to write a paper about one issue in the system and how we can fix it. And like propose a policy. And so I feel like it allows us to, like, really expand upon what we want to do and where we think we can be helpful. And so we also are learning about the system and doing so.I'm glad that I was able to, like, hold off and get a job until this year. Because it actually it's incredibly hard to have classes like all day and then go to work and then have time for like yourself, a social life and still do homework.I think in a general sense, like everyone could use some sort of like help or relief. Because things happen like COVID, for example, like things just happen to people and life just happens. So I think it's good to have a sort of security just in case."About SLU: Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions.
