Donor support opened doors for Saint Louis University School of Medicine student McKenna Smith, who hopes to someday pay her experience forward.McKenna says, "Being a student is more than academics, and it's about engaging in every type of field that you can to learn.I am one of the co-class presidents. I get to do leadership that way and I get to do research as well. And I coach a girls on the run team twice a week. And so all of these wonderful experiences it felt that SLU saw would make me a great physician.It would make the mental burden of a financial commitment, like medical school, so much larger if I didn't have a scholarship. And so I think it just allows students to really focus on the things they're passionate about and devote time into those things.And then you want to give back in the way that you can. The generosity of Saint Louis University donors is helping Doisy College of Health Sciences student Anna Durfey graduate with less student debt, allowing her to prioritize her goal of making an impact in her community.Anna says: "Scholarships make college accessible and attainable for all people.From the scholarships I've received, it's really allowed me to invest more time in extracurriculars at SLU. I'm president of the Saint Louis University Running Club and of Saint Louis University's Dietetic Association, which are two clubs that I really care deeply about.SLU’s prepared me for my future in many different ways. I spent two summers working at their culinary camp, where you're teaching kids basic cooking skills that are going to help them out throughout their whole life. I spent time working in our urban farm. And we're one of the only programs in the country that offers clinical experience in undergrad.In nutrition and dietetics, there's a lot of opportunities to go into jobs that are lower paying, but are really serving communities in need.
