Inside Saint Louis University's Jesuit Center

Opened in the fall of 2022, Saint Louis University's Jesuit Center houses Society of Jesus priests missioned as SLU professors, pastors and staff members.Located off Laclede Avenue and visible from the West Pine Mall running through the center of campus, the Jesuit Center creates a space for enhanced interaction between Saint Louis University’s Jesuits and the wider community.Video Transcript Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D.: [00:00:00] SLU's new Jesuit center shows the university community's commitment to supporting those who have dedicated their life to serving the Society of Jesus. It's wonderful to have them in this new facility in which they can better serve our institution and the community beyond.David Suwalsky, S.J., Ph. D. ('89,'10): [00:00:20] With the university's help. We opened up this place for an active Jesuit community where you can step out the door and be immediately on campus.Michael Rozier, S.J., Ph.D. (‘03): [00:00:28] This provides a central location for us to be with the students and our fellow faculty and staff in both formal ways and informal ways.David Suwalsky, S.J., Ph. D. ('89,'10): [00:00:40] One of the things we've really missed is the fact that the University Jesuit community has been scattered around town.Timothy McMahon, S.J. ('80): [00:00:46] There was no one single place where all of the Jesuits connected to the university work lived and could be found here. You can see the spire of the chapel, you can see the building, and you know that that's where the Jesuits are and that they're here.Marian “Bo” Vatterott Mehan (’74,’82): [00:01:01] For many, many years, the Jesuits carried Saint Louis University on their backs, from every perspective, from the business perspective, the educational perspective, the financial, the spiritual. It's our turn to take some of that load on our backs. And I think this building really helps to do that.Terry Mehan (‘74): [00:01:21] Without the Jesuits and without all the wonderful gifts that they bring to this community and its students. It's just another university. It is a tremendous value for our own spiritual welfare.Michael Rozier, S.J., Ph.D. (‘03): [00:01:36] I would not be a Jesuit today if it weren't for the Jesuits that I met as an undergraduate student over two decades ago. And so my vocation, my my very being is as grounded in those relationships. And so whether you become a Jesuit or not. Hopefully the relationships that we're able to build with students are the things that last a lifetime.About Saint Louis UniversityFounded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions.
