SLU Historians Host National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute

Claire Gilbert, Ph.D., associate professor of history; Fabien Montcher, Ph.D., assistant professor of history; and Charles Parker, Ph.D., professor of history, will host their National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) summer institute called Global Geographies of Knowledge: Creating, Representing, and Commodifying Ideas Across Early Modern Places, 1400-1800 this year. The institute will bring together 30 higher education faculty members from across the world to Saint Louis University to transform the way in which history is taught. Rather than studying history in a chronological, linear fashion, the institute will encourage history to be studied and taught spatially. This is especially important for Saint Louis University as it makes a name as a leader in geospatial studies and innovation.Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions. Rooted in Jesuit values and its pioneering history as the first university west of the Mississippi River, SLU offers nearly 13,000 students a rigorous, transformative education of the whole person on campuses in St. Louis, Missouri, and Madrid, Spain. At the core of the University’s diverse community of scholars is SLU’s service-focused mission, which challenges and prepares students to make the world a better, more just place.
