Be the Reason: Esme Garcia
Scholarships help students from all backgrounds attend Saint Louis University. Hear from SLU School of Education student Esme Garcia on how donor support is increasing access for all.Esme says:"When I first decided that I wanted to go to SLU, my main concern was how am I going to pay for it?With the scholarships, it has made the process of being able to enjoy being in classrooms, being in this degree, way less stressful. Of, like, not having to think about how am I going to pay for school or if there's ever if there is ever a time where I need something financially, I know the people to go to and they help me with it.So overall, it just makes it less stressful.Ever since I was little, I always liked the idea of being a teacher. I think the main thing is just having students that look like me see themselves as teachers.I know a lot of times as first, I'm a first gen, and I am Latina, so I think a lot of times a teacher that is going into like an elementary school or middle school or something, the first thing is like, oh, you're the Spanish teacher, you know? And I think that's something that I've always didn't want, I knew I didn't want to do.And so going into elementary school, I think about it, and I'm like, okay, like I can be a second-grade teacher, I can be a third-grade teacher, and I can have students that look like me that might eventually want to go in education. And who knows, they could think that they aren't able to do it just because they've never seen teachers like that.Without any other support from anybody else I don't know what I would have done."
