Research Opportunities for Students at Saint Louis University

Graduate and undergraduate students at Saint Louis University have opportunities to conduct research with our award-winning faculty across a diverse range of interests. From the sciences to the humanities, hear from SLU students currently connected with a research lab about:+ What types of research you can do at SLU (0:33) + How students get involved in research at SLU: (:50) + Taking an active role in research: (1:16) + How student research translates into real-life opportunities: (1:50)Learn more at slu.edu/research/student-researchTranscript:Chinye Nwokolo: I've always been a curious learner. I was always asking questions as a kid. I did research throughout college; that just got me into more questions.Denae Cherry: The smartest person doesn't know everything, but will ask questions. And that's kind of how I felt about SLU. They're allowing me to ask those questions, and they're helping me find those answers.Sara Parikh: What research essentially is, is you have a question, you go through a scientific process to find your answers, and that doesn't have to be just in a lab. For example, the Forest Park Living Lab. Our research, the way we collect data is through walking through the park.Sierra Morena: At SLU, we do research of all kinds, like all kinds of psychology, social justice, public health.Kyle Archdeacon: College is so much more than like the time, the opportunities are available to chase whatever your passion may be.Julia Pratt: I still get to kind of follow my passion of sustainability with the skill set of computer science.Blake Recupido: The way, like, the faculty support the students. They really do want every student to succeed.Sierra Morena: Something that they kind of talk to us about right off the bat like in our freshman year classes, is just how many students are involved in research at SLU and how impactful our research is that we do here.Nathan Thobaben: As I was getting out of the army I thought, hey, you know, it'd be cool to be an astronaut. You need at least a master's, research or industry experience. We're trying to improve materials for superconducting quantum computing. You're doing frontier research. People haven't done what we're doing. I'm not just watching other people work. I get to do experimental stuff myself.Touba Taheri: We are working to develop a new kind of face mask with better protection, capture all of the viruses.Chinye Nwokolo: Studying gastric cancer, I get to interpret the data.Dane Bossert: St Louis has a lot of public health issues, but also, I'm getting to see how Saint Louis is solving those issues and at Saint Louis University. You get to be a part of the solution too.Bryce Takenaka: At SLU, I was really able to foster my research interests, and I feel competent and confident.Touba Taheri: I have learned so many skills in the lab. I have built my resume.Julia Pratt: My name is going to be on a manuscript—an opportunity that I don't think I would have gotten at a bigger school.Dane Bossert: This past summer, I had an internship in Washington, D.C. and the work that I did there felt fairly simple after what I had been doing in the classroom, what I had been applying in the city.Sara Parikh: Through this research opportunity that I have, my eyes have been open to so many more possibilities.Julia Pratt: The confidence and the connections as a direct result of the research has set me up very, very nicely for my future.Chinye Nwokolo: I'm glad I came to SLU.
