Saint Louis University researcher and physics professor Jean Potvin, Ph.D., studies blue whales up close, deploying tracking tags in the open ocean and uncovering new insights about these incredible animals.Through his work at the SLU Water Institute, Potvin and his students are applying those discoveries to research on environmental challenges, including microplastic pollution.His research is featured in the Saint Louis Science Center's "Blue Whale: The Exhibition," on display through Jan. 10, 2027.--Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions. Quiñones Pares said that without financial assistance, he would need to work one or two jobs while keeping up with a rigorous law school curriculum. "I’ve had an amazing experience here at SLU LAW, especially in the healthcare program. It's been a great opportunity to practice the skills I developed before coming to law school, and then merging that with some of the legal training that we're exposed to here at the school.I think the health law program equips students with the skills that we need, and the resources that we need to address these very complicated regulatory and public policy level problems.In addition to serving as an editor on the SLU Law Journal, I am a summer associate here in a St. Louis law firm. And it's been an amazing experience so far. I've been able to work on substantive legal projects and assignments. I've been able to build relationships with attorneys across the firm and across the country.It's been a great opportunity to practice all the skills that we learn here at the University, but in the real world. And it's been, just a great opportunity overall and has really strengthened my interest in becoming a healthcare lawyer. Donor support opened doors for Saint Louis University School of Medicine student McKenna Smith, who hopes to someday pay her experience forward.Smith says, "Being a student is more than academics, and it's about engaging in every type of field that you can to learn.I am one of the co-class presidents. I get to do leadership that way and I get to do research as well. And I coach a girls on the run team twice a week. And so all of these wonderful experiences it felt that SLU saw would make me a great physician.It would make the mental burden of a financial commitment, like medical school, so much larger if I didn't have a scholarship. And so I think it just allows students to really focus on the things they're passionate about and devote time into those things.And then you want to give back in the way that you can.
