SLU Physician Hopes to Develop Walking Prescription for Knee Pain

Sarah Gebauer, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, provides primary care to the underserved population in Saint Louis County. She commonly sees patients with knee pain and arthritis who ultimately may end up needing a replacement. To hold off on the operation, she encourages her patients to walk because exercise is the best medicine for the pain. However, because she has realized not everyone has access to walkable spaces, she is proposing a partnership between herself, the Advanced Health Data Research Institute, and the Taylor Geospatial Institute so that she can develop a standardized and workable walking prescription that will hopefully delay patients’ needs for joint replacements.Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions. Rooted in Jesuit values and its pioneering history as the first university west of the Mississippi River, SLU offers nearly 13,000 students a rigorous, transformative education of the whole person on campuses in St. Louis, Missouri, and Madrid, Spain. At the core of the University’s diverse community of scholars is SLU’s service-focused mission, which challenges and prepares students to make the world a better, more just place.
