Students were very engaged and that stood out. 0:52 There are opportunities working with communities, in community. 0:57 Being rooted in the city, we have a responsibility ability to promote health in our home town. 1:04 Students and faculty and staff have relationships built on trust within the community that allow you 1:10 to learn things in a hands-on way that isn't in all university or college settings and 1:16 in public health that's so important, it's so integral to the work that you're doing. 1:20 When I was out in public-health practice, working in a local health department, 1:24 Saint Louis University was the place that treated you like a partner, they've cared. 1:29 I don't think that's something that you always experience with other academic institutions. 1:34 I think a lot of them do come to SLU because they are interested in that type of engagement. 1:39 I selected the school because I really felt like the professors really were invested 1:45 in my career and really understanding what I was hoping to do post-graduation. 1:50 For the next generation of scholars and whether you're a masters or doctoral or 1:54 undergrad I think you want to always expose them to what researchers are doing because then it 1:59 allows them to see their own place too, in the ecosystem of what it is we do in public health. 2:04 I'm a graduate assistant for the Center of Excellence 2:07 in Maternal and Child Health, so I've been able to get really close 2:10 to the faculty who are doing that kind of research and really expand my skill set. 2:15 We have students who do internships throughout the country. 2:19 I was working on projects in class with students who were 2:23 actively VPs or directors for non-profits in the city. 2:27 It was also a very positive school culture. It 2:30 really made you feel like you were at home and inspired you to do your best. 2:34 They value networking and relationships, that absolutely moves your career forward. 2:38 I really felt very well equipped to enter the workforce. 2:42 I definitely feel that I'm being set up for success here. 2:44 To see them kind of form into the leaders that they're going to become 2:49 and get to ride along for that is pretty amazing.
