- 1:30Be the Reason: Jaylen Riley Be the ReasonScholarships help students from all backgrounds access Saint Louis University's Catholic Jesuit education. Hear from SLU School of Law student Jaylen Riley on the importance of donor support in increasing access to a transformative education.Jaylen says: "I talk about service and being a socially aware attorney. I think that receiving this scholarship will help me do both of those things, and it has helped me to do both of those things.I've been able to dedicate a lot of my time to BLSA, the Black Law Students’ Association, that otherwise without the scholarship, I don't think I would have been able to do.And then also the clinical work that I do, I know that, you know, if I if I weren't on this scholarship, I probably would not be able to do that. I'd have to, you know, work just to make ends meet.I knew I wanted to do civil work after I graduate. And so I got involved with our civil advocacy clinic. We, you know, work on prison litigation and, just helping members of our community who are underprivileged. I'm a big proponent of diversity, equity and inclusion, and I think the world is kind of moving in that direction.A lot of law firms are realizing that, you know, we need diverse attorneys in order to, you know, not only to remain competitive with clients, to have those voices in the room. And so when I think about scholarships and bridging that gap, I think about having more black attorneys, having more women attorneys, having more LGBTQIA plus attorneys. All of those things are important for the future of our profession, the future of our community, and definitely the future of this country."About SLU: Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions. - 1:44Be the Reason: Larry YangScholarships help students from all backgrounds access Saint Louis University's Catholic Jesuit education. Hear from recent SLU School of Medicine alumnus Larry Yang on how donor support has been helpful on his journey toward an M.D.Larry says: "I think scholarships have really impacted the way that I thought about where I go for residency and what specialty I pursue.Unfortunately, a lot of students when they're thinking about specialties, finances are also a part of that consideration. For example, the salary and how much they'll be making. There's the idea that some residencies and specialties are quicker to do than others, and all because of that, some people might be more inclined to pursue a specialty that maybe they're not interested in as much, but they know will help pay the bills. So, for me, I'm very interested in internal medicine, and historically it hasn't been the most well-compensated field, but it is the one that I enjoy the most. And so because of the scholarship, I feel like it's helped me really pursue that specialty comfortably. There were a couple of reasons why I really enjoyed Saint Louis University in terms of choosing my medical school. And one of the reasons is the holistic approach that our curriculum employs.Students are able to see patients very early on in their career and their education and be able to develop a longitudinal experience.I was definitely surprised when I was able to see my first patient in only the first week of medical school, and I thought that was just a fantastic experience. It really set the stage for what I learned in class. It's one thing to learn about about questions and pathways and lectures, but another thing to understand that this is all done for the for the patient at the end of the day."About SLU: Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions. - 1:28Be the Reason: Ann KellyScholarships help students from all backgrounds access Saint Louis University's Catholic Jesuit education. Hear from SLU School of Professional Studies student Ann Kelly on why donor support has been helpful on her journey.Ann says: "It's been such an honor, and I'm so grateful for all of the donors that help with scholarships. When you're trying to, you know, as an adult, maybe still working full time and going to school - I'm married, and I have a daughter - so, you know, finances is a real-life part of the puzzle, and it really takes a lot of the stress off of it.I chose SLU because I love my Catholic faith, and they are local. I grew up here in St. Louis. They're a great educational institution, and I wanted something that was challenging and well-known for its academics,I know that the Jesuits are so well-known for their education and their spirituality, having a strong faith, and strong academics and strong in service. So, I am really passionate about my faith and going to a Jesuit institution really just helps me to continue to, go on that path and grow spiritually.I think it's motivating to receive the scholarship and it really makes you want to do well not only for yourself but also for those who are supporting you.I just think we have such a great community where that support is just so important and I'm grateful for it."About SLU: Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions.
