- 1:30Be the Reason: Malaisyah VannScholarships help students at Saint Louis University all across their college journeys. Hear from SLU alumnae and graduate student Malaisyah Vann on how donor support stepped in when times got hard.Malaisyah says: "Finances are a big part of whether you can get good education.Recently, my family has gone through some financial hardships. And so having extra money or just like scholarships is really helpful, especially since I had to take like more classes because I am a double major and I am pursuing a master's degree. And so it's just giving me a little freedom to like, pursue what I want and to actually do something that I would like to do.For my capstone in criminal justice, we have to write a paper about one issue in the system and how we can fix it. And like propose a policy. And so I feel like it allows us to, like, really expand upon what we want to do and where we think we can be helpful. And so we also are learning about the system and doing so.I'm glad that I was able to, like, hold off and get a job until this year. Because it actually it's incredibly hard to have classes like all day and then go to work and then have time for like yourself, a social life and still do homework.I think in a general sense, like everyone could use some sort of like help or relief. Because things happen like COVID, for example, like things just happen to people and life just happens. So I think it's good to have a sort of security just in case."About SLU: Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions. - 1:32Be the Reason: Eric PieningScholarships help students from all backgrounds attend Saint Louis University. Hear from SLU pre med student Eric Piening on how donor support is helping on the first step of his journey to becoming a physician.Eric says: "Before researching it, I never really had thought about how much college was going to cost. And then when you go through these preliminary searches online, you see all these, you know, huge numbers where it’s going to cost thousands and thousands of dollars to go to school for college. And that's something that really worried me. And then coming here with different sorts of financial aid and scholarships is something that has really been alleviated. So I'm really grateful for those opportunities. If I had gone somewhere else, I might not have had the opportunity to work in a medical school or a medical school that puts so much emphasis on doing research for the community. And I also think that it's similar to my service opportunities at SLU, with their Jesuit background and kind of how they're in this densely populated city. There are so many opportunities to do service and help other people here, and I love that SLU puts an emphasis on that and has really allowed me to get involved here. After graduation, I am hoping to be accepted and matriculate into a medical school so that I can pursue what I find my calling to be of practicing medicine as a physician. So that is something that I'm very excited for the possibility of. The scholarships have enabled me to experience less financial pressure so I can dedicate more time to my studies and my extracurriculars outside of working. They really have enabled me to attend the school that I love and to really get the most out of my college education. - 1:26Be the Reason: Gael CosgayaScholarships help students from all backgrounds access Saint Louis University's Catholic Jesuit education. Hear from SLU Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business student Gael Cosgaya about how donor support made his dreams of becoming a Billiken come true.Gael says: "All of the donations, all of the grants, all of the scholarships that I received, it's it's impacted my family the most, like my mom and my dad. Because now, we're able to focus more on my younger siblings and giving them a better life, a better a better future. And so I haven't been able to worry about, you know, making ends meet or paying or anything like that since everything's already covered. And I'm able to focus 100% on school now. This has been a dream come true. SLU was one of my dream colleges. I've been able to gain more patience, more knowledge, act more professional. We have a small family business called Rosario's Cleaning Services. My mom started cleaning residential homes. Then, a year later, I opened up commercial cleaning, where I was able to expand onto schools and offices.I recently closed a big contract, and so it built a little bit of momentum. And now I'm rethinking what I want to do after college, whether it's continue to grow my family business or go into private accounting. Hopefully, one day, I'll be able to give back."About SLU: Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic institutions. - 1:26Be the Reason: Esme GarciaScholarships help students from all backgrounds attend Saint Louis University. Hear from SLU School of Education student Esme Garcia on how donor support is increasing access for all.Esme says:"When I first decided that I wanted to go to SLU, my main concern was how am I going to pay for it?With the scholarships, it has made the process of being able to enjoy being in classrooms, being in this degree, way less stressful. Of, like, not having to think about how am I going to pay for school or if there's ever if there is ever a time where I need something financially, I know the people to go to and they help me with it.So overall, it just makes it less stressful.Ever since I was little, I always liked the idea of being a teacher. I think the main thing is just having students that look like me see themselves as teachers.I know a lot of times as first, I'm a first gen, and I am Latina, so I think a lot of times a teacher that is going into like an elementary school or middle school or something, the first thing is like, oh, you're the Spanish teacher, you know? And I think that's something that I've always didn't want, I knew I didn't want to do.And so going into elementary school, I think about it, and I'm like, okay, like I can be a second-grade teacher, I can be a third-grade teacher, and I can have students that look like me that might eventually want to go in education. And who knows, they could think that they aren't able to do it just because they've never seen teachers like that.Without any other support from anybody else I don't know what I would have done."
