2025 Match Day: SLU Medical Students Secure Residencies Nationwide
ST. LOUIS — (March 25, 2025) Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine students participated in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), which matches students annually with the programs where they will complete their residency training.
Before Match Day, students apply and interview at residency programs in their chosen specialties and rank their preferences. The residency programs also rank their student preferences. The rank lists are then matched through the NRMP.

On Friday, March 21, the SLU School of Medicine Class of 2025 gathered at the Chase Park Plaza in the Central West End to discover their matches.
The ceremony included addresses from Christine Jacobs, M.D., vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine; Chad Miller, M.D., senior associate dean for undergraduate medical education; and class elected speakers Ayanna Shambe and Girija Vaidya.

“We warmly welcome those who will continue their training at SLU, and for those moving on, we know they will carry SLU with them—in the medical knowledge, clinical skills, and resilience they've honed over the last four years. Congratulations on this milestone!” Jacobs said.
The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education (GME) program successfully matched144 GME positions in the NRMP Match! Among these, 23 positions are filled by SLU medical students. Miller echoed Jacobs sentiments during his address.
“It has been an honor to watch the transformation from unsure but enthusiastic M1 students to the seasoned students that you are today,” Miller said. “Match Day is not just about where you will spend the next few years of your training. It’s a celebration of your dedication, hard work and resilience.”

Meet the Class of 2025
In 2021, SLU received 8,220 applications and conducted 962 interviews. Of those interviews, 180 students became the incoming Class of 2025. They represented 83 undergraduate institutions. Of those, 43 students went to SLU for undergrad. The average MCAT score was 512.
Geographically, 46% of the class was from the central region, 30% from the west, 15% from the south, 4% from the northeast, and 4% were international. Then, the average age of students was 23 years old. The age range for the class was 20-33 years old.
Twelve of the students were first-generation college students. Two were military veterans. More than half the class took a gap year. Thirteen have master’s degrees. Five students are named Megan, the most common name in this year’s cohort.
The Class of 2025 submitted 9,271 applications and completed over 2,400 residency interviews. Students applied to over 2,000 programs and were matched into19 specialties.
This year’s class matched into residency programs across the United States, including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Naval Medical Center-San Diego, UCLA Medical Center, University of Hawaii, University of Chicago Medical Center, Tufts Medical Center-Massachusetts, University of Texas Medical Branch, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Henry Ford Hospital-Michigan, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai- New York and SSM Health St. Louis University.
“I’m reminded of an African proverb, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,’” Shambe said. “Class of 2025, look at how far we’ve come together.

Established in 1836, Saint Louis University School of Medicine has the distinction of awarding the first medical degree west of the Mississippi River. The school educates physicians and biomedical scientists, conducts medical research, and provides health care on a local, national and international level. Research at the school seeks new cures and treatments in five key areas: infectious disease, liver disease, cancer, heart/lung disease, and aging and brain disorders.

Pestello, Ph.D., and First Lady Fran Pestello, Ph.D., offered a gift to the SLU community. During a reception Monday afternoon in the Pius XII Memorial Library, the Pestellos helped unveil a new sculpture they are donating to the University. The sculpture, titled "Land, Labor, Legacy," was created by Ohio artists Kyle and Kelly Phelps.
